Buildwise projects
Buildwise is the research institute for the Belgian construction industry, funded by Belgian contractors. Buildwise is an innovation center for construction engineering knowledge for all construction professionals: contractors, architects, engineers, manufacturers, as well as clients and governments. In the context of innovation and digitization, Buildwise plays an important role in the creation and dissemination of knowledge and methodologies that help small and large construction companies work more productively and efficiently, including through recommendations, publications and working groups bundled through the Digital Construction Cluster.
Buildwise works at various levels and for a very broad spectrum of contracting companies: from the large Class 8 contractors to the small sole proprietors and family businesses. Simultaneously, it also coordinates with the other building professionals: architects, engineering firms, manufacturers and the various government agencies.
D-studio provides a wide range of services, in a combination of projects, consulting and development.
Cluster digital construction
From the application and start-up of the Cluster Digital Construction (formerly: Cluster BIM and Cluster Construction Industrialization), D-studio has been actively involved in various working groups with agreements and guidelines around digital construction: protocols, modeling agreements, BIDS (Belgian Information Delivery Specification), classification, manufacturers, standardization (CEN/TC 442 and NBN mirror committee), training and competencies.
Apps & tools
Buildwise builds an arsenal of computational tools and “apps” for various support in often complex applications (e.g. application of a specific standardization).
Some of these calculation tools have been converted to web applications by D-studio, making them directly usable without additional technical requirements or installation by users: CInt (Category Interactive), Buildwise Search Plug-in, FENESTRio.
Some new applications were also developed, such as the Maintenance Guide and the BIMio IFC model viewer.
Research projects
Buildwise leads some research projects with VLAIO funding, in which D-studio is one of the project partners:
- Digital4Circular (VLAIO Living Lab) around sustainability, circularity and BIM (2023-2025);
- FireBIM (ITEA + VLAIO & Innoviris) on BIM and fire safety (2024-2026).
BIMids.eu
The Pottery Street apartment building, in poor condition, will be demolished to make way for social housing that will be better integrated into the neighborhood.
Advise and perform quality control. Analyze, control and optimize the transfer of BIM models and the operational aspect of the BIM process.
Initially check whether the engineering firm is on the right track in terms of modelization.
Check of the models architecture/ stability and special techniques. Only
meetings to guide the BIM process of the enineering firm.
Various consulting
Finally, D-studio has a number of direct consulting assignments for Buildwise, including updating the Belgian reference documents (protocols and related templates) to the ISO 19650 standard on information management in construction projects.
D-studio co-writes the basic documents and associated Wiki documentation and guides.
BIM Methodology
During the various assignments, D-studio always closely follows ISO and CEN standards, such as ISO 19650 (Information Management), ISO 24891 (Information Handbook), ISO 16739 (Industry Foundation Classes), ISO 7817/EN 17412 (Level of Information Need) and so on.
In addition, the Digital Construction Cluster also forms the Belgian component of buildingSMART Benelux, in which D-studio is an active participant.
