BIMio
W
eb platform (ecosystem) around construction engineering knowledge and BIM for Buildwise.
Challenges
- As a knowledge center, Buildwise has a very diverse collection of knowledge documents in the form of technical publications, magazines. They also work on demo centers, to bring the knowledge of materials and construction techniques to contractors, as well as engineering firms and architects. However, much of this knowledge is in rather traditional PDF documents, meant to be printed or read on screen. To unlock this knowledge requires restructuring, as well as a higher level of digitization. This requires rethinking how such documents are constructed and published.
D-studio is Buildwise’s technology partner in the development of a digital eco-system for the unlocking and management of construction knowledge around products, materials and execution techniques.
Access is provided for knowledge documents, computational applications, with integration into BIM technology (via software plug-ins and the integration of a model viewer).
D-studio is responsible for the platform itself (back-end, front-end), in close collaboration with external partners (i.a. for UX/UI design, but also preferential software partners). This creates a modular and extensible platform, which on the one hand provides a homogeneous environment for the users (the website front-end), but on the other hand also offers thermal applications (calculation tools, apps) and the corresponding APIs, so that third parties can connect to the platform.
Finally, there is also Buildwise’s explicit desire to enable its own experts to (gradually) add new computational applications to the platform themselves, as well as to actively manage all content and construction data so that the platform can function as a Content Management System.
The first applications launched are FENESTRIO (a set of calculation tools around joinery) and the Maintenance Guide (a maintenance guide to be compiled digitally). The BIMio Model Viewer and the first BIM plugins are currently in the testing phase.
TECHNOLOGY & PROCESSES
D-studio uses an Agile approach in this project, applying SCRUM methods. This involves intensive use of the Microsoft DevOps environment. Developments follow the latest Web Services approaches (initially in an AWS environment, but transferred to an Azure cloud environment at the client’s request).
In the field of BIM, we align as much as possible with current national and international guidelines, such as the work within CEN/TC 442 on data dictionaries.
